Born in Guyana and the youngest of ten children, Veronica faced societal expectations that questioned her place in martial arts. But her indomitable spirit took her to Toronto in 1975, where she began her relentless pursuit of excellence. Through perseverance and resilience, she earned her 1st-degree Black Belt by 1979.
Her competitive streak was unmatched, earning her titles such as Ontarioβs Amateur Athlete of the Year in 1981 and Canadaβs No. 1 Female Fighter. Competing alongside legends like Billy Blanks on the World Atlantic Karate Team, Veronicaβs name became synonymous with excellence.
In 1999, she made history as the first woman inducted into the North American Martial Arts Hall of Fame. Despite facing significant barriers as a single woman of color in a male-dominated field, Veronica proved her critics wrong. Her inclusive academy now spans three locations, offering martial arts, self-defense, and anti-bullying programs to countless individuals.
Veronicaβs philosophy is rooted in perseverance, determination, focus, and confidence. Living by the principle of C.A.N.I. (Constant and Never-ending Improvement), she inspires her students to reach beyond their limits. Her message to young martial artists, especially women, is clear: βAnything can happen when you are truly committed.β
Grandmaster Veronica De Santos is a relentless force, breaking barriers and inspiring future generations. Her story is a testament to the power of hard work and self-belief.
